Peekamoose Blue Hole – Swimming In The Sundown Wild Forest!

Peekamoose Blue Hole is one of the greatest swimming holes in the country, and it still is, despite overuse in recent years. Located in Sundown Wild Forest, it’s a 25 min amazing, winding, drive from Glenford House.

New York State has taken steps to preserve and protect Blue Hole. A free permit is now required, but only on weekends. “New York State (DEC) announced a new no-cost, day use permitting system requiring visitors to obtain a permit to access the Blue Hole, located in the Sundown Wild Forest of the Catskill Park in the town of Denning, Ulster County. The new permitting system is designed to strike a balance between ensuring State lands are open and accessible to the public while reducing environmental damage and enhancing public safety.” To get permit:

The water is crystal clear and clean, and cold. Blue Hole is actually blue from its depth (about 15 ft) and purity. Upstream is the Sundown Wild Forest, and the mountains of Catskill State Park. The lush topography provides natural diving spots, and big slabs and steps of stone perfect for basking in the sun to warm up and dry out. There’s even a rope swing! The area is a deep notch in the forest with amazing waterfalls and other areas excellent for swimming, and diving.

Upstream from Blue Hole the water isn’t as deep, and it’s a short easy hike where you’ll find more privacy, and other swimming holes that are safer for kids. There’s even a natural water ride into Blue Hole, where the stone channel has been worn smooth from centuries of water flow.

Buttermilk Falls is another easy walk from Blue Hole. The pool at the bottom reminds me of Gollum’s fishing spot in Lord of the Rings.

Buttermilk Falls. Amazing is not an exaggeration!

Woodstock Brewing Comes to Town-Phoenicia!

Cool new place for our guests to visit, Woodstock Brewing Company:

It’s a great place to hang out with friends, or have a beer crawl in one place. We’re friends with the River Arts owners, who have a store in the plaza, so it’s a natural for us.

MONDAY: 3 to 8
THURSDAY: 2 pm – 8 pm
FRIDAY: 2 pm – 10 pm
SATURDAY:  12 pm – 10 pm
SUNDAY: 12 pm – 8 pm
Woodstock is in the name, but it’s actually in a plaza in Phoenicia, at 5581 NY Rt 28. Their beer is delicious, I usually get the Between Two Points ale. (It’s a Saison style Farmhouse Ale with a smooth finish and beautiful color.) They have at least five choices, all very highly rated by BeerAdvocate, “World-Class” actually. The owners are very creative; they always have something new to taste, and they’re also very serious about their product.

“Permanent Midnight” porters resting – “notes of dark chocolate, toasted almonds, and freshly roasted coffee.”

Deborah’s choice “By Way of Synthesis”-oat brewed, full fruity notes, long lovely finish.

Their pretzels are fresh and a nice snack, served with coarse ground mustard. A kitchen is planned for the future. Right now people are ordering from the pizza restaurant next door, – Resort Ridge Pizza (menus available). I had spicy wings, Deborah and our friends ordered a sesame crust mushroom pizza, and a chicken wrap- all were excellent.

Note they have plenty of taps for more offerings that are in the works.
We will definitely be going back soon to try their newest brews!

Hike Mink Hollow Woodstock NY

Mink Hollow is a wonderful place to hike, and so close, just West of Woodstock off route 212. Grab some amazing sandwiches from Provisions Deli in Woodstock and have a picnic!

The trail is soothing from the beginning, with a burbling stream,

and a very manageable incline. It’s shady and cool, and there are lots of interesting spots to relax and rest:

Bedroom Before and After

Upstairs bedroom with double bed and water views.

We updated our 2nd upstairs bedroom with fresh white linens and found the perfect original painting by local artist Lynn Fliegel. Lynn is a long time friend of ours and we were so happy to be able to find the perfect piece for the room.

Lynn shows her art at the local Gallery in Phoenicia called “Arts Upstairs”. Which hosts a once a month pot-luck art opening on the third Saturday 6-9pm. All are welcome and you’ll find some amazing deals on local art.

David sewed the removable pillow cover on his “new”/used sewing machine he just bought at Sew-Woodstock, right in town.

Our Favorite Catskills Swimming Spot…Blue Hole

One of the best place to cool off in the Catskills! It’s about a 25 min. amazingly beautiful drive from the house, deep in the heart of the Catskills in Peekamoose-Sundown Wild Forest State Preserve. A very easy quick- 3 min. hike gets you there. Waterfalls unfold around each forest bend in the long winding road (take County Route 42 from West Shokan and just stay on it)

I call Peekamoose “the place where Grandmother Catskill dwells”.

Ashokan Reservoir Walkways- spotlight

A truly lovely place to walk, jog, bike ride, Rollerblade located 5 minutes from the Glenford House. It’s a good bet for kids and elderly, as it’s off the road, safe and flat. Just a great place to take in all the beauty of the Ashokan reservoir and awesome Catskill Mountains. Often you can see bald eagles. Here’s a link to map both walkways. There are two:

Santa Fe of Woodstock-New Restaurant 4 Minutes from The Glenford House

A new Mexican restaurant just opened a few weeks back called Santa Fe of Woodstock.

It’s on route 28, less than 5 minutes from the Glenford House.

We tried it and are pleased to say ” it was pretty good”. The service was quick the grassfed burger and fries is a deal at $11.95. The guacamole was fresh and lemony, just the way I like it. All and all a decent meal, at a good price. The Margaritas were perfect! Nice selection of on tap beer, as well.
